Jack Tatum, the Pro Bowl safety for the Oakland Raiders  has died at the age of 61.

Tatum who was nicknamed “The Assassin” and also known as one of the most feared tacklers of all time, died of a heart attack earlier today in a hospital in Oakland.

Jack is best remembered for his crushing hit on August 12th 1978 that paralyzed Darryl Stingley in a preseason game where he slammed into the player with his helmet and left him paralysed neck down.


Tatum has been known to have diabetes over the last several years and had lost his leg to circulation problems due to his illness.
